About Thai Cuisine
Thai food is internationally famous. Whether chili-hot or relatively bland, there is flavor harmony in each dish. Thai cuisine is essentially a marriage of centuries-old Eastern and Western influences harmoniously combined into something uniquely Thai. Originally, Thai cooking reflected the characteristics of a waterborne lifestyle. Seafood, plants and herbs were major ingredients, while large pieces of meat were avoided. Subsequent influences introduced the use of sizeable chunks to Thai cooking.
Thai food relies heavily on: curries, ginger, lemon grass ( pictured left), basil, several different chillies, cinnamon and other spices. Shrimp plays a big part in Thai cooking as do chicken and pork. Like other Asian foods, rice is used as a side dish, fried and for noodles. Thai food also uses a lot of lime and coconut milk.
